On 28 September 2022, 3 new additional Luis y Antonio Portabella scholarships have been awarded for the winter semester

On 27 January 2022, a jury granted the “Luis y Antonio Portabella Scholarship” 2022/23 to 7 students from the University of Luxembourg.

This scholarship began for the new recipients from the summer semester.

The Chairman of the Foundation, Mr Ricardo Portabella, expressed the wish to bring the number of beneficiaries of the “Luis y Antonio Portabella Scholarship” to 10 students in 2022.

The association Les Amis de l’Université du Luxembourg considered this wish and invited 5 candidates to the final stage: the interviews with the jury.

Therefore, the jury met again on 28 September 2022.

The jury took account the following selection criteria:

  • The financial and social aspect of the students
  • Their motivation
  • Their academic excellence background
  • Their personal goals and careers after they graduate


After deliberation, the jury decided to award the scholarship to 3 following candidates:

  1. 1.Mahmoud Samir AHMED : from Egypt, studying for a Master in Civil-Engineering
  2. 2.Danial BAJGIRAN TABBAKH : from Iran, studying for a Master in Integrated Systems Biology
  3. 3.Andrew PFANNKUCHE : from USA, studying for a Master in Contemporary European History


Their application form, as well as their presentation during the interviews, fully met the criteria of the scholarship which, since its creation in 2017, is fully financed by the Foundation Luis y Antonio Portabella.

The scholarship is intended to contribute to the cost of living and housing of the students.

Its starts for the 3 news winners from the winter semester 2022/23 and continues from semester to semester until the graduation.

Support to Ukraine and Russia

The Foundation has made a commitment to support directly and indirectly students who suffer from the impacts of the conflict in Ukraine. That is why the Foundation decided to award two deserving students, one coming from Ukraine and other from Russia, both studying for a master’s degree in Finance and Economics at the University of Luxembourg.
